What is the process for custom pieces?
First, you will want to gather inspiration. Once you have an idea of what you want, John will work with you over e-mail or in person to review any photographs, sketches, or ideas you may have for the piece.
Can you work within my strict budget?
If you have a specific budget in mind, John will try to work within that budget or advise you of options (design, materials, construction) that will help stay within it.
Do you paint furniture?
John Parkinson Furniture does not offer painting services at this time. However we do produce pieces that are ready to be painted by a contractor of your choice.
What is the design fee?
The initial consultation is free, however once the design process begins John requires a $200 design fee. This covers the commissioning of the project and will be deducted from the final cost of the piece. If you decide not to go ahead the design is yours to keep.
What are quotes based on?
Quotes are based on the product, product size, choice of wood, and other specified details. Repair and modification quotes are based on an hourly rate of $50 per hour.
What kind of deposit do you require?
An agreement signed by both parties and a 50% deposit is required as confirmation of your order, with the balance due on delivery. This deposit will also hold you a place on the production schedule.
Why did my furniture repair quote go up?
John provides a total hours estimate at the time of initial inspection. Should this change dramatically due to something unforeseen during the disassembly, you will be made aware and can decide if you wish to continue.
What kind of tools do you use?
John uses both hand and machine tools in his workshop to produce a range of furniture for a variety of different lifestyles and budgets.
Where did you get your training?
John was born and raised in the North East of England, and served woodworking apprenticeship at the Newcastle College of Arts and Technology completing a 3-year City & Guilds Institute course in 1979.
